I thought I would provide my experiences of the EXCELLENT Shimano XTR products. FH M965 XTR rear hub In 2003 I purchased the M965 XTR groupset in the UK. I opted for the whole groupset with rapid rise rear derailleur.

The Hubs were a controversial choice. My LBS, The Edge Cycleworks, in Chester were trying to steer me to another set of Hope hubs. Although those are nice they're not special and I wanted something more bombproof and lighter. The new XTR seemed to be the answer. They were built to Mavics X819 UST rims. The hub is now 5yrs old, it has possibly ridden about 20 000km in those 5 yrs and has only been serviced once. The labyrinth seals work exceptionally well. I have serviced the freehub twice but it is still ticking along nicely. The rims have been replaced 4 times already and I now have a NoTubes ZTR ARCH rim laced to it. It has got to be the most cost effective hub I have owned. Another lovely feature of these hubs is that they run with very little drag thanks to the non contact labyrinth seals. The bearings are easy to service when needed and are easily obtainable. Any wear on the races is easily taken up by adjusting the cones (which are replacable). The races are also replacable but I am not sure if Coolheat imports them. I've never needed to. At a little over 320gr it's very light, durable and way cheaper than anything the competition can offer. It replaced the M965 XTR ZTR ARCH wheels I have been using. The M965 XTR has proven to be reliable and durable so the choice ws easy. Chris King rear hub was way out of budget, making the choice even easier. These wheels have now done about 4000km. The freehub held up well to jet washing by lazy pit crew at the Cape Epic but once my Freehub Buddy arrives, I'll sort them out with a thorough clean out and regrease. Post Epic te hub was opened up to check for water; surprisingly there was none. Shane cleaned it out anyway and now they are running just as sweetly. The rims came out of the Epic with a slight buckle but considering the terrain we rode over,I am surprised that they are not completely finished.Thewheelset itself is an excellent design. The spokes canbe replaced by the rider in the field so to speak.

A std flat spanner will work as a spoke wrench and there is a flat on the spoke were it can be held with either the supplied tool or a Leatherman tool to proventwind out of the spokes. The spoke threads into the hub and the rim so no spokes popping out ala CrossMax. The Scandiu rim does knock quite a bit of weight off the design and the 10mm aluminium axle and titanium freehub lighten things further. The faster engagement does not really make a difference but then I've never felt the benefit of faster take up anyway. Still it's there if that kind of thing floats your boat. I cannot think of a single reason why these wheels should not be purchased. Oh hold there is 1; WH-M775 Deore XT. Xt is a cheaper and heavier package but it offers all the real benefits of XTR. ANyone overlooking these wheels is really looking to buy bling. These cannotbe beat for durability, cost and weight ratio.Heck i cant understand why more people have not commented. Do you have experience with deraileurs XTR versus SRAM X0 ans shifters. This seems to be a rotor or pad resonance, though the rear brake infrequently hits a frame resonance as well in the right conditions (that seems to be coupled through the mount and not the hydro line). Tried all the basic stuff a while back when I picked up the bike used without any great luck. I've been living with the squeal as it hasn't been that big a deal---most of my wet riding is on a different bike---but it's getting old. So I've lately I've been casting about for other fix possibilities. I've some shims on the way to try some alignment tweakery and need to pick up some anti-squeal paste.

However, I happened to notice Shimano's WH-M965 manual contains a note the SM-RT96 rotor may produce unwanted noise and that the SM-RT77 rotor is recommended (fifth bullet in the upper left corner). My bike is not fancy enough to have the M965 XTR wheels but it does have BR-M965 (the brake), HB-M965 and FH-M965 (front and rear hubs), along with SM-RT96 rotors. So, while my wheels are the usual three cross lace up, the braking arrangement seems likely to be identical to that of the WH-M965. Anybody see a reason why this would be a bad idea or wouldn't work. So far as I know all Centerlock rotors are interchangeable so I'm assuming the XT SM-RT77 rotors will fit on my hubs. The SM-RT77 pattern trickled down to the SM-RT63 and then the SM-RT53. So, if one doesn't mind the 30 gram weight difference, there's no particular motivation to pay double for an SM-RT77. Or, for the same budget, try the non-IceTech SM-RT79 on the idea it'd probably perform better and run quieter (IceTech isn't that much more expensive but putting a cooler running rotor on a bike with of history of minimal fade and lots of needing to have the pads dried off to shut up doesn't exactly seem like a wise choice). Couple midway options in the SM-RT64 and SM-RT78 too. A little investigation confirms the RT79 uses the same 14mm track width as the RT96. So I think I'll try 79s as this morning's application of anti-squeal paste made things quieter but the brakes are still annoyingly loud when wet.Haven't tried it on the back but may get a second one for the rear at some point. The front brake still squeals due to fork resonance (the pads are stronger than the crown; under hard braking with a really wet rotor the axle judders visibly back and forth as the Fox F100X winds up and then pushes through the pad grip) but it's harder to excite the fork resonance and it's lower pitched and less annoying when it starts up.

Beside the changes in punch pattern something that probably helps is the CenterLock splines are a much snugger fit to the hub on the RT79 than the RT96.ConsumerREVIEW.com, a business unit of Invenda. If so thats easy peasy! - if it is the Cassette body, I'll try and see if I can get one somewhere - Had a quick look on CRC earlier, and they're ?80 - So not that bad. Got something rather spangly to show everyone on Sunday - Await a very pretty, expensive bicycle! I'll update when I get the bike - and the exact nature of the problem await spangly bike! The rear hub has been described as needing a service.Jake how much are XTR freehubs at retail. It's last years XTR hub as shown below. They use cup and cone because when tightened to the correct torque it spins with less resistance than a pressed, sealed bearing - apparently! Orge. What bike you got then? Also Jake cheers for the reasurance. Hopefully won't need a new free hub body, as that would be rather expensive. Is there a guide anywhere on the internet to take it apart. So kinda think I need a new one. Shop CategoriesAll Categories Shimano FH-MT900-BS Straight Pull Rear Hub - Centerlock Item Description With Shimano's new XTR propelling into the realm of larger cassettes, we were eager to see what it might be available throughout the line, to those of us with slightly more conservative upgrade budgets. Fortunately the Shimano FH-MT901-BS Straight-Pull Rear Centerlock Hub was quick to answer that question, bringing a non-series hub that comes equipped with a Micro Spline freehub, allowing you to run the new XTR M9100 twelve and eleven-speed drivetrains, without braking the bank on hubs. It features straight-pull spokes for stiff control, and impressively durable, while packing in smooth-rolling characteristics that we've come to know from Shimano's offerings. It comes ready to lace up to your favorite rims with 28-holes, serviceable cup and cone bearings, and is compatible with centerlock rotors for easy set up. With updating XTR in mind, Shimano developed an all new freehub body called Micro Spline that allowed them to move from an 11t to a 10t small cog on their cassettes while adding a 12th gear, increasing the gear range to a whopping 510% on their wide-range 12-speed cassette. And fortunately for you, the band opted to carry through with adding Micro Spline to other offerings, so it's not only reserved for those with seemingly endless upgrade budgets.

The Micro Spline freehub body is made of aluminum instead of steel, saving weight while actually improving durability as the smaller and more numerous splines are designed to distribute force more evenly over a greater area, preventing the cassette from eating into the freehub body. As we noted earlier, this hub uses cup and cone bearings that are serviceable. That's definitely something you'll want to do on occasion in order to keep them running in top shape, and to continue enjoying greater strength and better load displacement than sealed cartridge bearings.
